This personal assessment - tool is a series of questions that will help you make an informed decision about whether becoming a Youth Officer is the right career for you. These questions are directly related to the role of a Youth Officer within Juvenile Justice. Please note that if you answer YES to these questions, you will be asked to provide good examples (either verbally or written) where appropriate to support your self-assessment?

2. Are you prepared to work outside in situations in all types of weather conditions? Yes No

3. Can you work in an environment that is restricted and which you will not leave until the conclusion of your shift? Yes No

5. Are you prepared to sometimes work in high risk situations, emergency environments and carry out physical activity?

7. Are you genuinely interested in Young People and believe you can treat them humanely and fairly, regardless of their status background, culture, beliefs or sexuality? Yes No

10. Are you prepared to work rotational shifts, involving days and nights, on weekends and public holidays, including New Year, Easter, Christmas and other days of religious or cultural significance, as required? Yes No

13. Can you think on your feet and solve problems when you know a lot depends on your decision? Yes No

14. Routines are an important requirement of a Youth Officers position, can you cope with structure? Yes No

15. Are you committed to devoting your first 6 weeks of your employment with the NSW Department of Juvenile Justice by attending the compulsory Youth Officer Induction program conducted at the Departments Training Facility at Haberfield, Sydney. (Note: If you are applying for a position within a regional location the Training will be conducted within that area.)

17. Are you committed to maintaining your physical fitness through regular exercise, a sound diet and habits which affect good health? Yes No

18. Do you have the sensitivity to deal with Young People and their families in stressful situations? Yes No

19. Do you believe you have the ability to deal with, in some cases, hostile and threatening behaviour? Yes No

If you have answered NO to some of the questions you should think carefully about your decision at this time to apply for the position of Youth Officer with the Department of Juvenile Justice.
